Wilmington Community Unit SD 209U
New High School
Wilmington CUSD 209U selected Frederick Quinn Corporation (FQC) to provide Construction Management Services for the much needed revitalization of its aging school facilities. The community had not constructed a new facility since 1969. One of the District’s goals was to get the “biggest bang for the buck,” which included the addition of approximately 150,000 SF of space as well as the renovation and upgrade of two other educational buildings. The major component of the District’s building program was the construction of the new Wilmington High School campus. Some of the amenities of the new high school are:
- A single story wing of the new high school is dedicated for special education students with unique needs. Classrooms are designed with ADA amenities.
- District administration offices capable of supporting community functions and standard school district operations.
- Full service district central food preparation area and multipurpose “cafetorium” space capable of functioning as an auditorium, cafeteria or large scale meeting area.
- Development of 45 acre parcel including parking and athletic facilities.
The district initiative also includes improvements to the existing high, middle and elementary schools. A complete rehabilitation of the existing high school will allow it to function as a middle school, and additions and renovations to the existing L.J. Stevens Middle School will permit the district to house all of its 4th and 5th graders in a single building and function as the elementary school.
