Helen Plum Library
New Helen Plum Memorial Library
Frederick Quinn Corporation (FQC), selected as the Construction Manager, is moving forward with the much awaited new Helen Plum Library in Lombard.
The history of the project goes back to December 2015 when FQC completed a Facility Condition Assessment Report to evaluate building systems and their condition. The emphasis of the assessment was on the infrastructure systems (mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection), though interior and exterior finishes were also part of the report.
In response to this assessment Engberg Anderson Architects and FQC developed a 5-year master facility plan. In 2016, the library board moved forward and passed a public referendum.
Following years of site evaluation and negotiations with the local park district to remain on the existing library site, the decision was made to choose a new site on Main Street, near downtown Lombard. The new 2-story, 55,000 SF facility will feature larger meeting and study rooms with the latest audio and visual technologies. It will also allow the library to expand its Youth Services to include a storytime room and flexible activities space. The adult collection will occupy the second story - a quiet space surrounded by windows, and the center of the building will be a community “Hub” featuring a café area with seating. The new building will also feature a convenient drive-thru for easy pick up and drop off as well as self check-out stations.
The library will be opening to the public in the Spring of 2023.
